BMC to Install 117 CCTV Cameras in Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, and Borivali to Combat Illegal Dumping of Construction Debris

In a bid to address the increasing problem of illegal dumping of construction and demolition debris, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install 117 CCTV cameras across four major wards: Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, and Borivali.

This initiative, part of the first phase of a larger strategy, is aimed at deterring violators by monitoring and recording activities at chronic dumping locations to identify and penalize offenders.

The new measures come as the city faces a surge in complaints related to debris dumping. Recently, BMC officials removed over 150 metric tons of dumped debris during a single day of a deep cleaning drive.

Specific locations in each ward have been identified for the installation, including 40 spots in P North (Malad), 25 in K West (Andheri West), 2 in P South (Goregaon West), and 50 in R Central (Borivali).

“CCTV surveillance will enable us to capture critical details such as vehicle numbers and offender identities, making it easier to act swiftly,” a BMC official said.

Additionally, a dedicated mobile app will provide real-time access to photos and addresses of dumping locations for ward staff. This information will also be displayed on LED screens at municipal solid waste offices to ensure timely action at problem spots.

The tendering process for this project is expected to start after the state assembly elections.
